Romney Wins Endorsement of Anti-Immigration Lawmaker Kris Kobach

Romney Wrongly Touts Arizona, South Carolina for ‘Stepping Forward’ on Immigration

(WASHINGTON)—Mitt Romney today won the endorsement of Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, the lawmaker responsible for many of the anti-immigrant laws now on the books.

In accepting the endorsement, Romney went on to praise South Carolina and Arizona for “stepping forward” on immigration when in fact lawmakers in those states have championed vehemently anti-immigration legislation.

Kobach said Romney is the candidate “who will stand shoulder to shoulder with the states that are fighting to restore the rule of law.”

Kobach’s endorsement speaks volumes of what a Romney Administration would do for immigration laws in this country, said Deepak Bhargava, executive director of the Campaign for Community Change.

“Romney’s bankrupt effort to appeal to a hard-core conservative minority by pandering to anti-immigrant politicians like Kobach will only serve to alienate Latino and other minority voters in the general election,” Bhargava said. “Romney risks standing on the side of divisiveness and scapegoating while putting in stark terms what’s at stake for pro-immigrant faith, business communities and minority constituencies.”
