Message to Romney: Very Poor Do Matter

Lives of Millions of Families Deserve Romney’s Concern

(WASHINGTON)—GOP presidential frontrunner Mitt Romney’s incredibly outrageous statement that “I’m not concerned about the very poor” demonstrates a total lack of understanding about the lives of real people and the tattered state of our social safety net. The implication that the poorest people in our society have “enough” is fundamentally offensive and out-of-touch.

Grim statistics show that: 46 million Americans live below the poverty line, with many pulling in only $5,000 a year; one out of 634 homes in America is in foreclosure; 15.7 million children live in poverty, and; 1 in 5 children go hungry every day.

“There is every reason to be greatly concerned about the very poor in this country, the working poor, the middle class – almost everyone but the wealthiest 1 percent of Americans is struggling,” said Deepak Bhargava, executive director of the Campaign for Community Change. “Through our Change Nation network, the Campaign is devoted to helping rebuild the economy and lifting Americans onto a solid financial track that leads them to a secure future and retirement.”

“Mr. Romney’s own tax returns show that he makes on average $60,000 a day from investment income, which amounts to the yearly income of about four ‘very poor’ families,” Bhargava added. “Fortunately for him, he will never face the hard decisions families are making every day; families currently choosing between having enough to eat and being able to stay in their homes deserve better than insults.”
