Civil Rights Groups March to Support Voting Rights

Voter Suppression Laws Rampant Across Country

WASHINGTON—Civil rights groups will be marching in New York City on Saturday to demand that lawmakers stop the rollback of voting rights in America. This year, two-thirds of state legislatures have introduced laws that undermine the right to vote.

Early voting and Sunday voting are under attack, photo ID requirements will introduce the first financial and document barrier to voting since the poll tax, and racially-motivated bans on ex-felons will wipe tens of thousands off the rolls.

The march is being led by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

“African American, Latino, Asian American, Native American, students, young people, seniors, working women and immigrants of all colors are being targeted,” said Deepak Bhargava, executive director of the Campaign of Community Change. “The right to vote is the heart of our democracy. Throughout our history Americans have been murdered for defending this basic human right. Don’t let it be taken away from millions today.”
